Unit 5B – “Radiation”

Product Thumb:

Unit 5B addresses radiation on a wall-mounted graphic panel with a reader rail below and an adjacent dosimeter interactive that measures radioactivity. Text acknowledges that radiation can be harmful but emphasizes the myriad ways radiation benefits people every day, from medical diagnoses and treatment to food safety and deep space exploration.

The hands-on interactive display measures the radioactivity of various everyday radioactive materials using different shielding materials. The display is comprised of a dosimeter mounted behind two wheels, one containing samples of the radioactive materials and the other with shielding materials. Visitors can determine the most effective layers of protection by turning the wheels and comparing different combinations. A meter above indicates the amount of radioactivity passing through the shielding material.
