Zone 2: Understanding Basic Factors in Energy

How is electricity created? Can it be stored? How is it distributed? These are just a few of the questions addressed by the exhibits in this zone. To understand the challenges and complexities associated with generation, transmission and storage, visitors must first grasp the basic principles of energy and electricity. The exhibits in this zone present the fundamentals and subsequently introduce more sophisticated concepts such as “Smart Grid” technology. Visitors will also learn about the energy industry, how it is regulated, and how technology is shaping the future of distribution.

Two hands-on learning stations engage visitors in the topics presented. The first is a manual interactive illustrating how a generator works through the turn of a hand crank, which illuminates a series of light bulbs. The second is a dynamic media treatment that challenges the audience to take the reins of the power grid and play the role of the grid operator.
